For those of you who do not know why a fabric is called 80's, allow us a quick lesson in textile science. 80's refers to the fine nature of the spun yarn. The higher the number, the finer the yarn. To spin such fine yarn you need high quality long staple cotton. This summer we decided to take our casual shirtings to a new level. We used extra fine yarn, often used on dress shirts, and wove a "featherweight" cloth. The Portofino ultra light, breathable and super soft. It was inspired from the beautiful fine poplin shirts often making their rounds on the gentlemen of Portofino. For rich and saturated colors, we decided to double dye these shirts in beautiful summer tones.

We spend quite a bit of time on the road and a good fair amount in the weaving mills of India. Our travels through Chennai (formerly Madras), the home of the madras cloth, is always a highlight. The local weavers perfected the art of weaving loose "power loom" fabrics into the recognizable "madras cloth." This season we dug into the 1970's archives of the weaving mill that has been in the same family for over 50 years. The soft and light cloth is ideal for the hot and humid weather of the subcontinent.  We took the concept for a spin, weaving a lightweight twill in the same techniques as the old madras cloths.  Wear it with our Thompson shorts or pair it with our Edward denim.

The reference to "cottage looms" goes back to the early days of commercial textile weaving. In India the cottage loom industry thrives by making unique cloths that speak to the heritage of a bygone era. This season we partnered with an old family mill in Chennai to deliver a few original patterns. We love to dig into the provenance of things. One of our favorites is the toweling fabric.
